Mohammad Sohel,Cox’s Bazar : The camp’s head boatman Rafiqul Islam and the camp in-charge (CIC) have protested against a recent media report titled ‘Allegations of being taken to Myanmar in the name of sending them to Malaysia, threats and withholding ration cards’. They claimed that the news was published unilaterally and their statements were not taken before publishing the news. Head boatman Rafiqul Islam told reporters that the incident in question was a family dispute about two years ago. He claimed that one of Mohammad Hossain’s sons illegally went to Myanmar through a broker’s ring to go to Malaysia. Later, to bring him back, the wife of Mohammad Hossain’s second son borrowed one lakh taka from her sister and gave it to her father-in-law. Later, when Mohammad Hossain asked for the money back, he refused to give it. This incident led to a family dispute and there were allegations that there were multiple quarrels and torture incidents.
He said that when the wife of Mohammad Hossain’s second son sought justice from him, he tried to settle the matter through arbitration several times. But as there was no solution, he suggested presenting the matter to the Camp In-Charge (CIC). Later, a hearing was held with both parties at the CIC office. There, it was decided to waive off 50,000 taka out of the 100,000 taka and pay the remaining 50,000 taka, and he claimed that both parties accepted it.
Meanwhile, the wife of Mohammad Hossain’s second son told reporters that when she asked for the 50,000 taka as stipulated in the trial, her in-laws harassed and beat her in various ways. They even threatened to divorce her. Later, she reported the matter to the CIC office again.
In this regard, the CIC of Camp-22 told reporters that after receiving the complaint, the administration held several hearings and investigations with both parties. The investigation revealed that it was a family dispute. In order to settle the matter, it was decided to waive 50,000 taka out of 100,000 taka with the consent of both parties and pay the remaining 50,000 taka. He further said that later, the decision was not implemented and the second son’s wife was accused of torture, so the ration card of the concerned family was temporarily suspended as an administrative measure. In addition, there are several written complaints against Mohammad Hossain’s family by various residents of the camp. He said that the complaints include drugs, weapons and disturbing the peace and order of the camp. The administration is continuing to monitor these complaints. He also said that a decision has been taken to relocate the family to another place in the interest of maintaining the overall peace and order of the camp.
Head fisherman Rafiqul Islam said that the failure to present his and the CIC office’s statements in the published news has obscured the real events and tarnished his social reputation. He called for objective news to be published with the statements of all parties concerned before publishing such allegations-based news in the future.
