Mymensingh Correspondent: Allegations have been raised of attacks and vandalism on the house of a helpless family in Ishwarganj, Mymensingh, attempted murder by drowning them in a pond, beating them to death, and molestation of women over a land dispute.
The incident took place on Wednesday (August 5) afternoon in Maijhati village of Rajibpur union of the upazila. In this incident, the victim, Anwar Hossain (23), filed a written complaint with Ishwarganj Police Station, naming 4 people and 4/5 others who were not identified.
The accused are Israfil (48) and Wahab (45), sons of the deceased Abdus Samad of the same village, and Wahab’s sons Sajib Mia (23) and Habib Mia (21). The defendants are the plaintiff’s cousin and nephew.
The written complaint states that there had been a long-standing dispute between the two parties over land. On Wednesday afternoon, an alley in the field accidentally broke, causing water and sewage to enter the opponent’s land. In light of this incident, the accused, armed with country-made weapons, attacked Anwar Hossain’s house in a pre-planned manner.
Anwar Hossain was bathing in the pond at the time of the attack. At that time, Habib Mia, on Israfil’s orders, tried to drown him in the pond water and strangle him to death. When Anwar’s younger brother Nazrul Islam went to rescue him, Sajib Mia beat him and injured him.
When Anwar’s brother’s wife Nazma Khatun (27), Swarna Akhter (20) and mother Ayesha Begum (55) came forward to save him, the defendants also beat them up. The attackers molested the women and vandalized the furniture of the houses and an auto-rickshaw. Later, when the neighbors came forward, the attackers threatened to kill them and left. After the incident, the injured were rescued and taken to the Ishwarganj Upazila Health Complex for primary treatment.
When we went to the homes of accused Israfil and Wahab to get their statements on this matter, they could not be reached. Even though we asked the family members for their mobile numbers, they were not available. As a result, it was not possible to take their statements.
In this regard, Ishwarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Azam said, “We have received a written complaint regarding the incident. Legal action will be taken after investigation.”
