The Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (Pabiprabi) campus, the highest educational institution in the southern region, surrounded by lush greenery and natural beauty, captures everyone’s mind. Anyone will be mesmerized by this beauty at first sight. The campus of the university is one of the most natural beauties of the country with 132 acres of land in the beautiful natural environment of Dumki upazila, 15 kilometers from Patuakhali district town. As soon as you enter through the main gate of the university, you will see the eye-catching greenery and the touch of natural life. Anyone will be mesmerized by this beauty at first sight. How it started: Janata College of higher secondary level was established in 1972 with the efforts of local education-loving individuals. The education program of the college started by collecting donations of paddy, rice, money, trees, bamboo, etc. from the common people of the area in the round leaf tent. Former Minister M. Keramat Ali, founding principal AFM Mosharef Hossain Khan, then Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Abdus Shakur and Bangladesh Agricultural University Dean Professor Dr. In 1979, under the initiative of Wadud Mia, it was converted into a graduate college named Patuakhali Krishi College. This agricultural college was affiliated to Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh and started functioning as a private agricultural college in the academic year 1979-80 at the undergraduate level. Later in 1984 the then government nationalized the college. Development trend in the university: After nationalization the college plays a special role in producing skilled agriculturists.

As a result, in the 90s, the local people demanded the life of ‘upgrading the Patuakhali Agricultural College to a university’. On March 15, 1997, the then government announced the promotion of Patuakhali Agricultural College to Science and Technology University and on July 8, 2000, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of Patuakhali Science and Technology University on the infrastructure of Patuakhali Agricultural College. Later on July 12, 2001, the Patuakhali Science and Technology University Act was passed by the National Parliament. On February 26, 2002, Patuakhali University of Science and Technology became a full-fledged university through an official notification. At that time, by appointing the Vice-Chancellor and forming the Board of Regents, he started the higher education program in the form of a full-fledged science and technology university. Present Status: After being recognized as a university, this university has been successfully carrying out its educational programs till now. Currently there are 550+ hundred including 3000+ students, 250+ teachers, hundreds of officers and employees in 8 faculties. Thousands of students have graduated from this university and are playing an active role in the development of agriculture in Bangladesh. Moreover, since 2007, the introduction of Master’s and PhD degrees has opened new horizons of higher education. Present Faculties: Although the journey started only with the Faculty of Agriculture, currently 8 Faculties including Business Administration and Management, Computer Science and Engineering, Fisheries, Food and Nutrition, Land Management and Veterinary Medicine are in operation to meet the timely needs of the country and the nation.

Dr. Swadesh Chandra Samant, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that the PhD program has already been started in the higher education extension of the University. The vast Manoramcampus of the University is established on 130 acres of land. Among them, the main campus on 35 acres and the residential dormitory and agricultural research farm on 95 acres of land. A long tree-lined lake in front of the academic building of the main campus adds another dimension to the beauty of the university. The blue waters of the lake are enthralled by the various species of fish. And on both sides of the lake, the rows of mahogany, coconut and various species of forests, fruits and medicinal plants will attract anyone. A state-of-the-art student hall adorns the northwest corner of the campus. Next to the mosque is the health center of the university. And opposite is the air-conditioned library building and the state-of-the-art Student Teacher Auditorium (TSC). A wide road connects the campus from Pirtala in the east with the Patuakhali-Bauphal highway in the west. On the south side of this road is the residential building of teachers and officers, the location of Rupali Bank. Agricultural research farm established on 95 acres of land in Pirtala Bazar Perulei to the east of the main campus, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Hall, M. Keramat Ali Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall in the multi-storied (10-storey) building. There is a higher secondary school and college named Srijani Vidya Niketan. Where the sons and daughters of the teachers working in the university are getting the opportunity to study. The university also has an out campus. The Veterinary College at Babugonj, Barisal is considered as an off-campus as it is an affiliated college of this university. The University is planning to build 3 separate faculties including Fisheries, Marine Science and Forestry at Sagar Saikat Kuakata. For this purpose, the acquisition of 800 acres of land and ancillary activities are in process, said the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Swadesh Chandra Samantha. Modern teaching method: Credit course system system of America which is known as modern teaching method is running in this university. In this education system of semester system, the courses are completed on time so there is no session jam. The academic term ends in 8 semesters students can complete their education on time and enter the desired career. Also, among all the universities in the country, English language was introduced as the medium of agriculture education in 2002 for the first time in this university. There are 14 well-equipped laboratories for hands-on education. A large central laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment. The university is able to play an important role in innovating new technologies in the field of agriculture. There are 4 demonstration farms for technology transfer at farmer level. 45 days internship is compulsory for the final i.e. eighth semester students of the university.

The main aim of this internship is to work hand-in-hand with local farmers. The main objective of the internship is to promote modern technology in agriculture by combining the knowledge gained by the interns with the experience of the farmers. As a result, local farmers are getting an opportunity to be encouraged to use modern technology in their agriculture instead of Mandhata period farming methods. It has already gained wide acceptance in the southern region through various survey based researches of students of business administration department. Residential system: Among all public universities, this university is the only residential university in the country.

There are residential facilities for almost all students. For students ‘Shere Bangla Hall’, Bangabandhu Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall, M. There is Keramat Ali Hall and Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujeeb Hall, Begum Supiya Kamal Hall for female students. The construction work of 4 residential halls with 10 floors including Begum Fazilatunannecha Mujib Hall, Sheikh Russell Hall is in progress. These four residential halls have accommodation facilities for almost all the students. Library:

The university has a rich library. The two-storied library building has more than 20,000 different types of books, volumes, periodicals. In this library, teachers and students get the opportunity to read the desired books in pin fall silence. In addition, in front of the library building, the fall afternoon gathers with the students’ life. Cultural Activities : There are several cultural and social organizations like Khayali, Andromeda, Pathachakra, Kavita Parishad, Debating Society, Prothom Alo Bandhu Sabha, SITE (Information Technology Club), Business Students Forum. The main gate of the academic building is adorned with recent wall magazines which have undoubtedly increased the beauty of the building manifold. Cultural programs organized on the occasion of New Year, Rabindra-Nazrul Jayanti etc. are crowded with teachers-officials-students. Debate competitions are organized on various recent topics. Film exhibition was organized 3 times last year. Which creates a lot of excitement across the campus.
