Water scarcity and heavy flow has gripped Lalmonirhat district.  Corn, rice and vegetable fields are burning in the ongoing heat wave.  However, farmers are trying to keep their crops alive by artificially watering them as much as possible.  Besides, water shortage may disrupt the target of boro rice production.

On the surface, it was seen that the corn had turned into dry chalk due to lack of water.  The plants where the corn has grown have dried up and the kernels have become very small.  which have become unfit for marketing or processing.

Belal Hossain, a maize farmer of Gokunda Union of Sadar Upazila, said that he planted maize on his 5 bigha land.  Out of this, three bighas have been provided with light irrigation.  Couldn’t do the rest.  He also said that the farmers do not have irrigation problems during such storms with rain.  The water that is needed is replenished by rainwater.  But at this time such a drought has never been seen before.  Not only crops or vegetables, but the trees are supposed to grow new leaves at this time, but they are drying up due to the extreme heat wave.

Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department Lalmonirhat Dr.  Md.  Saikhul Arifin said that this time is suitable for harvesting.  However, artificial irrigation should be arranged in the morning or afternoon for those crops that will face water shortage.  This year, maize cultivation has been done in 35 thousand hectares of land across the district.
