Dipu Chakma is a highly educated and religious person. Shaved head, thick eye glasses, wearing ocher tri-chibar, anklets and Brahma’s garland in hand – this is like meeting a messenger! He remained untouchable because of his priesthood and clothes. Finally Dipu Chakma, head priest of Panchari Adarsh Buddhist Vihara of Khagrachari, was caught by the police along with 16,000 pieces of Yaba along with two associates. The police said that he came this way after losing everything in gambling.

Dipu Chakma said in DB’s questioning, he used to earn minimum 10 thousand to maximum 50 thousand rupees per shipment by doing this illegal work. Travel fare and food expenses were also given to him.

Three people including Dipu Chakma were arrested from a house in Moghbazar of the capital on Tuesday (February 13). In between, Apel Barua, Dipu worked as an agent for Chakma. Yaba, traders from Thailand, Myanmar employed Dipu Chakma as porters. But, the biggest question is why Deepu Chakma, educated in religious education, got involved in yaba trafficking.

Additional DIG Moshiur Rahman, head of Lalbagh Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police, said that DPU used to deliver these consignments of drugs to Momin Howladar, who rented houses in Narayanganj and Dhaka. It would spread from him to different parts of the country. Dharmaguru Dipu Chakma came to this world for the greed of money through Appel Barua, another Buddhist monk’s disciple. Apart from this, this priest, addicted to smoking since childhood, got acquainted with online gambling while staying at Khagrachari Sadar. From there he became addicted to gambling. He regularly gambled on four online sites. The Buddhist monk has collected 15 to 20 lakh taka. This money includes his own salary, donations from devotees, money from selling his house and one and a half lakhs borrowed from his mother. He became involved in the Yaba transport business after becoming wealthy in gambling.

In the initial interrogation, Dipu Chakma told the DB police that there are several other professions like him in disguise. Moshiur Rahman said, these people are respected by others in the society. Law enforcement forces always keep them beyond suspicion because of their dress and practice. For this reason, he (Dipu Chakma) has smuggled these goods from Dhaka-Narayanganj several times due to which he was not caught.
