Md. Abdus Sabur Robin: A new political tension has arisen over the murder of Jubo Dal activist Yusuf Ali in Kafrul, the capital. Denying allegations of his involvement in the murder, Kafrul Thana BNP joint convener Sabbir Dewan Joni has claimed that an attempt is being made to take the investigation of the incident to another sector. He alleged that there is a risk of obstructing the investigation if attempts are made to politically involve specific individuals while hiding the real criminals.
He made these allegations at a press conference organized at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) office in Segunbagicha, the capital, on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Three people, including Jubo Dal activist Yusuf Ali, were shot in a recent armed attack in the section number 13 area of Kafrul Thana. Yusuf Ali later died while undergoing treatment. Several people have already been arrested in connection with the incident.
Sabbir Dewan Joni claims that four people have been arrested on charges of participating in the killing mission. He also mentioned that Hafizur Rahman Hafiz’s name has emerged as the mastermind behind the murder.
‘Attempt to pin responsibility by showing pictures’
At a press conference held in Crab on Wednesday, Sabbir Dewan Joni said that Hafizul Islam Babu, the convener of Kafrul Thana Jubo Dal, tried to implicate him in the Yusuf murder by releasing some pictures. He claims that the kind of statement made by showing those pictures is misleading and baseless.
He said that it is natural for him to have contact and pictures with leaders and activists at various levels due to his political activities. He did not know any information that Hafizur Rahman Hafiz was involved in any criminal activities before the murder.
Sabbir Dewan Joni said, “Just because someone has a picture with him, it cannot be concluded that he is involved in a crime.”
He claimed that there are pictures of the accused Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, including the complainant Hafizul Islam Babu, and many other leaders and activists at various levels.
‘I have demanded action after the incident’
Expressing anger and condemnation over the killing of Yusuf Ali, Sabbir Dewan Joni said that he ordered party leaders and activists to go to the spot as soon as he received the news of the incident. At the same time, he demanded that every person involved in the murder be identified and brought to justice.
According to him, he has been in favor of an impartial investigation from the beginning. Legal action should be taken against whoever is found involved in the investigation. No one should be held responsible based on any political identity or personal relationship.
Questions about the course of the investigation
Sabbir Dewan Joni believes that the investigation is progressing to uncover the real mystery of the murder as the law enforcement agencies have already arrested a few people. However, he questioned why attempts are being made to politically link various individuals to the murder before the results of the investigation are released.
He said that such a campaign could create confusion in the public mind and also raise questions about the course of the investigation. He also commented that if political disputes are brought to the fore instead of identifying the real criminals, there is a risk that the real secret of the murder will be hidden.
‘Every person involved must be brought under the law’
At the press conference, Sabbir Dewan Joni demanded that all those directly and indirectly involved in the Yusuf murder should be identified through investigation. At the same time, he urged that no innocent person should be subjected to harassment or propaganda.
He said, “The evidence found in the investigation will be the basis for determining the crime, not photos, political identities or personal relationships.”
Expressing his hope that the law enforcement agencies will be able to identify the real criminals while maintaining impartiality in the investigation of the Yusuf murder case, he demanded the prompt arrest and exemplary punishment of all those involved in the incident, including the mastermind.
