Younger brother killed with hammer in Joypurhat: Elder brother gets life sentence

Md. Milan Raihan, Joypurhat : On 02 August 26 a court has sentenced a man named Ashok Kumar Das to life imprisonment for beating his younger brother to death with a hammer over a land dispute. He was also fined Tk 5,000 and sentenced to another month in prison in default.
Judge Md. Tasruzzaman of the Second Court of Additional Sessions Judge of Joypurhat delivered the verdict on Sunday (August 2) afternoon.
The convict, Ashok Kumar Das, is the son of Fanindranath Das of Damdama village in Panchbibi upazila.
Case details According to the case details and the complaint, Siddheshwar, the younger son of Fanindranath Das of Damdama village in Panchbibi upazila, was an ironworker by profession. He had been in a dispute with his elder brother Ashok over his land for a long time.
On the afternoon of November 16, 2009, Siddheshwar was resting on a bench in front of the shop after finishing work at the blacksmith shop. At that time, his elder brother Ashok came to the spot and hit his younger brother Siddheshwar on the head with a heavy hammer from the shop. When local people tried to stop him, Ashok fled the scene.
Later, locals rescued Siddheshwar in a dying state and admitted him to Joypurhat Modern Hospital. When his condition deteriorated there, he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He died there on March 29, 2010 while undergoing treatment.
In this incident, the deceased’s wife Kamna Rani filed a murder case with Panchbibi Police Station as the plaintiff. After a long legal process and taking testimony, the learned court announced the verdict today.
