World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day was celebrated in Joypurhat with great enthusiasm on May 26; Keeping in mind the theme of ‘Let’s work together, society will be humane’.
On Thursday (May 7), the day’s program began with the hoisting of the national and Red Crescent flags in front of the Joypurhat Red Crescent Building in the morning. After that, a huge human chain program was held at the city’s Zero Point (Panchur More).
Acting Deputy Commissioner Uttam Kumar Roy spoke as the chief guest at the discussion meeting organized after the human chain. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Joypurhat Unit Chairman and District Council Administrator Masud Rana Pradhan presided over the program, and Assistant Superintendent of Police Tuhin Reza, District Civil Surgeon Dr. Al Mamun, District BNP Convener Golzar Hossain and Joint Convener Abdul Wahab.
​Speakers at the discussion meeting said that the example set by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in the service of humanity is unique worldwide. Joypurhat Unit is also working tirelessly at the local level in disaster management and humanitarian assistance. The speakers highly praised the activities of the Red Crescent volunteers and urged the common people to be more motivated in human service.
​The function was also addressed by Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Noor Alam, Joypurhat Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Anwarul Haque Anu, Red Crescent Society Joypurhat Unit Vice Chairman Matiyor Rahman and General Secretary A.H.M. Obaidur Rahman Sweet, along with local dignitaries.
​It is worth noting that Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, was born on May 8, 1828. His birthday is celebrated as Red Cross and Red Crescent Day with deep respect worldwide. The Joypurhat unit celebrated the day through various programs throughout the day.
