The government has announced plans to upgrade Bogura Airfield and related areas to international standard airports with the aim of expanding air connectivity and economic development in the northern region. To this end, on Thursday (07 May 2026), Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Afroza Khanam, State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam visited Bogra Airfield and related areas. Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, OSP, GUP, NDC, PSC, Chairman of the Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority, local members of parliament and concerned military and civilian high-ranking officials were present during the inspection. Speaking after the inspection, Honorable Minister Afroza Khanam said that the northern region of Bangladesh has great potential in terms of agriculture, industry and tourism. Modern infrastructure development is the need of the hour to accelerate the overall development of the region. He said that a plan has been taken to upgrade Bogura Airfield to an international standard airport with the aim of further strengthening the air connectivity of the capital with the northern and northwestern regions of the country. State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat said that this is an important initiative to fulfill the long-standing expectations of the people of the northern region centered on Bogura. If the airport is implemented, new possibilities will be created in the business, trade, industry and tourism sectors. State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam said that modern communication system is very important for regional development. If the Bogra Airport is launched, the living standards of the people of the northern region will improve as well as employment opportunities will increase. At the time, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan expressed hope that if this plan is implemented, the country’s economic progress will accelerate, employment will increase in the relevant regions, and military capacity in airspace security will also be strengthened. He further said that gradually Bogura Airfield will develop into an important hub for both military and civil aviation, which will make a significant contribution to national interest. He also assured that the government will take necessary measures to resume commercial aviation as soon as possible and the Bangladesh Air Force will provide all-round cooperation in this regard. Locals believe that if Bogura Airfield is upgraded to an international standard airport, new horizons will open up in the communication, economy, investment and tourism sectors of North Bengal.
