Dinajpur Correspondent: A woman died in a fire in Birol Upazila of Dinajpur. In this incident, the deceased’s ex-husband has been accused of pouring petrol on her body and setting her on fire. After the incident, the police have arrested the accused Mahbubur Rahman (51).
The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Saturday (August 1) in Bijora (Sutarpara) village of Bijora Union No. 7 of the upazila.
The deceased Sumaiya Akhter Shyamoli (25) is the daughter of Sirajul Islam of that village. The arrested Mahbubur Rahman is the son of the deceased Sofi Uddin of Lalbagh area under Kotwali police station of Rangpur metropolis.
According to police and local sources, Mahbubur Rahman and Sumaiya Akhter Shyamoli divorced about two months ago. On Saturday night, Mahbubur Rahman went to Shyamoli’s father’s house. At that time, her relatives accused her of pouring petrol on her body and setting her on fire.
Hearing Shyamli’s screams, neighbors rushed to try to put out the fire. Later, she was rescued in a severely burned condition and taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. When her condition deteriorated there, the doctor on duty advised her to be transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment. However, she died on the way to Rangpur. Later, when she was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The deceased’s grandmother Momina Begum claimed that she was first attacked with a sharp weapon. After failing, petrol was poured over her body and set on fire. She demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Birol Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Emran said that the accused Mahbubur Rahman has been arrested after the incident. Legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint from the deceased’s family. The body has been kept at the Dinajpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said that an investigation is underway to uncover the real cause of the incident. Further legal action will be taken based on the information obtained after the investigation.
