Staff Reporter : The Bangladesh Journalists Development Association (BSUS) has pledged to stand by journalists who are facing various types of pressure, threats and harassment at work in the country. The leaders of the organization said this at a prayer and iftar mahfil organized at the Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday 14 March 2026.
The program was presided over by the organization’s chairman Md. Mominur Rashid Shine and conducted by Secretary General Muhammad Kamrul Islam.
Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Latif was present as the chief guest at the program. Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Vice-President KM Mohsin, Organizing Secretary Arfanul Haque Nahid, and Bangladesh Journalists Development Association Vice-President Md. Hasan Sardar Jewel were present as special guests.
Also present at the event were JUS General Secretary K.M. Jahangir Alam, Bangladesh Rural Journalist Foundation (RJF) Chairman Md. Jahirul Islam, Joint Secretary General Md. Azibul Haque Partha of Bangladesh Journalist Development Organization, Shahzada Sayed Md. Omar Faruk Pirsab, Organizing Secretary Abed Ali, Office Secretary Md. The speakers said that journalism is a risky profession. While publishing true and objective news, journalists often face threats, lawsuits, attacks or various types of social pressure. In such situations, many journalists suffer psychologically and professionally. Therefore, standing by the oppressed journalists and working to protect their rights is seen as one of the main responsibilities of the organization.
They also said that the media is an important pillar of a democratic state. If journalists cannot work independently and in a safe environment, it becomes difficult to establish transparency and accountability in society. Therefore, they called on the concerned authorities to take effective steps to stop any kind of oppression or harassment of journalists.
A special prayer was held at the event, seeking the welfare of the country and the nation, the development of the journalistic community, and the progress of the organization. Later, iftar was served in honor of the guests and members present.
The speakers expressed the hope that if a tolerant and cooperative attitude is developed towards journalists, the media will become stronger and the democratic system of the country will be strengthened. At the same time, they called on all journalists to practice responsible journalism by maintaining professional ethics.
