Md. Milan Raihan:

Transport workers in Joypurhat have held a protest program against BGB members for allegedly beating a Shyamoli Paribahan driver and his assistant.

This Saturday, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, the program was held by blocking roads in the city’s Panchur intersection and central bus terminal area for about two hours.

Due to the blockade, traffic on important roads in the city was almost stopped. As a result, people going to work, students and ordinary passengers suffered. Many were seen waiting for a long time, while some walked or took the help of alternative vehicles to reach their destinations.

The bus workers claim that a Shyamoli Paribahan bus was going from Dhaka to Joypurhat this morning. When it reached the Nishchinta area of Khetlal upazila, there was a dispute over giving way to the BGB vehicle. Later, the bus was stopped and beaten by some BGB members, who beat up the driver Hasan Ali and his assistant Saddam Hossain. The bus documents were also taken away. They held this program demanding a proper investigation into the incident and action against those responsible.

Several eyewitnesses said that they had to go out for various needs and suffer in the traffic jam. At that time, numerous pedestrians expressed their dissatisfaction with the vehicle drivers and the blockaders.

Auto charger driver Helal said that the road was blocked by placing buses and CNG in the Panchur intersection and bus terminal area. Rickshaw movement on the main road was also stopped.

Imran, a resident of Notun Hat in the city, said that the bus workers could have stopped the bus movement if they wanted. But it was not right to create suffering for the common people by blocking the road.

Meanwhile, the blockade was lifted at around 1:30 pm today after a meeting between the local administration and transport workers’ leaders. After that, traffic movement in the city returned to normal. Confirming the matter, District Motor Workers Union Vice President Golam Mortuza Shiplu said that the program was withdrawn after a meeting with the administration.

BGB-20 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Latiful Bari said, “The bus was moving at a fast pace. Our car was behind it. The driver did not respond even after asking for a side several times. Later, the bus was stopped near Joypurhat town and documents were taken. The allegations of beating the driver and assistant are not true, propaganda is being spread against the BGB.”

Joypurhat Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahnaz Begum said that the situation is normal at present, “I have been informed about the matter by the BGB. Instructions have been given to submit the bus documents to the police station.”
