Mirsarai Correspondent:
A head-on collision between a sand-laden mini truck and the intercity Paharika Express train occurred in Mirsarai, Chattogram today. While no casualties were reported, rail communication between Chattogram and the rest of the country has been temporarily suspended following the accident.
The incident took place around 9:00 AM on Sunday (June 7) at a rail crossing in the Sona Pahar Mama Fakir Mazar area under the Jorarganj union of the upazila.
According to local and eyewitness sources, the sand-laden mini truck suddenly got stuck on the tracks while crossing the railway line near the Mama Fakir Mazar in the morning. At that exact moment, the Chattogram-bound to Sylhet intercity ‘Paharika Express’ train was speeding towards the crossing. Seeing the train approaching rapidly, the truck driver and his assistant managed to save their lives by jumping off the vehicle just in time.
The high-speed train then violently rammed into the stranded truck. Due to the intensity of the impact, the truck was completely crumpled and became wedged tightly under the train’s engine. The train dragged the mangled truck for about half a kilometer before finally grinding to a halt.
Moments of Panic
Sajjad Hossain, a passenger on the Paharika Express, recalled the terrifying experience:
”The train left Chattogram station at 8:00 AM. While crossing the Jorarganj area, the entire train suddenly shook violently with a deafening noise. This triggered extreme panic among the passengers. After the train stopped, we got down and saw a sand truck stuck under the engine. By the grace of Almighty Allah, no passengers were injured.”
Confirming the incident, Sirajul Islam, the Station Master of Chinki Astana Railway Station, said, “The collision between the Paharika Express and the sand-laden truck occurred around 9:00 AM. Miraculously, there were no casualties or injuries.”
He further added that because the wrecked truck became tightly wedged under the train’s engine, it could not be removed immediately. Consequently, train operations on both the up and down lines have been temporarily suspended for safety reasons. A railway rescue team and relevant authorities are working relentlessly to clear the debris from the tracks and restore normal train services as quickly as possible
