“End of disputes over government expenses, Bangladesh comes first.” With this slogan in mind, a rally, discussion meeting and legal aid fair were held in Joypurhat on National Legal Aid Day. At 9 am on Tuesday, a colorful rally started from the Joypurhat District Judge’s Court premises and circled the main road via the Circuit House. Later, a discussion meeting was held after visiting the legal aid fair organized by the District Legal Aid Committee on the court premises. District and Sessions Judge Anup Kumar presided over it.
Police Superintendent Mina Mahmuda, Additional District Magistrate Mohaimena Sharmin, Chief Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam, Women and Children’s Court Judge Halima Mondal, and Acting District Legal Aid Officer (Senior Civil Judge) Faisal Ahmed also spoke at the event.
It is worth mentioning that in the past 01 year, a total of 693 pre-case ADRs, 87 post-case ADRs, and 1124 legal advice have been provided in Joypurhat. The amount of money withdrawn by the beneficiaries through amicable settlement is only 50 lakh 23 thousand 810 taka. In addition, panel lawyers have been appointed in 699 cases.
In order to create widespread public awareness about the provision of government legal services, the Cabinet meeting in 2013 declared April 28, the date of enactment of the Legal Aid Act, 2000, as National Legal Aid Day. The day is being observed nationally to increase awareness among people about legal aid.
