Mohammad Sohel, Cox’s Bazar : Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-15 has arrested Meher Ali (60), a long-time absconding accused sentenced to 1-year imprisonment in a forest case, in a raid in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar.
This information was given in a press release signed by RAB-15’s Cox’s Bazar Assistant Director (Media) A.M. Faruk on Saturday (July 25). RAB said that Meher Ali was arrested in a special operation in front of Nadiruzzaman Government High School in Rashidnagar Union of Ramu Upazila at approximately 8:20 pm on Friday (July 24). According to RAB, as part of the ongoing intelligence surveillance aimed at arresting convicted fugitives, an operational team of the battalion headquarters learned on the basis of secret information that Meher Ali, an accused convicted in a forest case, was hiding in the area. Later, after verifying the authenticity of the information, a drive was conducted and he was arrested.
The press release further said that in a forest case filed in 1991, the court sentenced Meher Ali to 1 year of general imprisonment, a fine of Tk 5,000 and an additional 3 months of general imprisonment in default. Since the verdict was announced, he had been hiding in different areas to avoid arrest for a long time.
The arrested Meher Ali is a resident of Varachhara village in Ward No. 5 of Joarianala Union in Ramu Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district and is the son of Badshah Mia. RAB said that during the initial interrogation, he confessed to being in hiding for a long time. The arrested accused has been handed over to Ramu Police Station for further legal action.
