The main connecting road of Kharua village in Mogolhat union of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila has been in a poor condition for a long time, causing extreme suffering to about 10,000 people. Due to major erosion and ditches in various places on the road, locals have to travel at the risk of their lives every day. The situation has become even more dire especially during the monsoon season.
On the ground, it can be seen that erosion has occurred in various places on the approximately three-kilometer road from Boalmari Mosque adjacent to the Beri Dam on the eastern side of the Dharla River to Kharua Bazar. In some places, the soil on both sides of the road has collapsed and fallen onto the adjacent land. As a result, the movement of various vehicles including motorcycles, vans, rickshaws has become almost impossible. Pedestrians are also risking their lives.
Locals said that about 10,000 people from at least five villages including Kharua commute on this road every day. Taking sick patients to hospitals, students going to schools and colleges, or transporting agricultural produce – all these are facing immense suffering.
Local resident Md. Mosharraf Hossain said, “Work was done on this unpaved road before. But it was not done as it was supposed to be done. Only a small amount of soil was dumped where there was erosion. Now, due to rain, soil on both sides of the road is collapsing and falling onto the ground. This is causing extreme suffering in daily traffic.”
He further said that when the road was damaged in the terrible flood of 2017, the locals repaired three kilometers of the road on their own initiative, spending about 5 lakh taka. But due to the lack of permanent arrangements, the same problem is recurring every year during the monsoon.
UP member of the area Md. Saiful Islam said, “Since the road is sandy, it breaks easily during the monsoon. Due to insufficient allocation, permanent repairs are not possible. If the road is paved by constructing guide walls on both sides, the problem will be permanently solved. The matter has been reported to the higher authorities.”
In this regard, Sadar Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Al Amin said, “As per the instructions of the Honorable Minister of Disaster Management and Relief, initiatives will be taken to pave the road by constructing the necessary guide walls during the dry season.”
