Numerous unlicensed driving training centers have sprung up like a frog’s umbrella in neighborhoods in Moulvibazar. Due to the lack of proper supervision and monitoring, many people are driving on the roads after receiving training from these institutions, which has become a major threat to public safety. Most driving schools do not have a quality training system, skilled instructors, or a curriculum approved by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). Instead of training, “training” is being completed by just driving for a few days. As a result, the number of inefficient and inexperienced drivers on the road is increasing. According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Act, 2018, the registration of driving schools is mandatory to be renewed every five years. Driving training activities are being carried out by opening temporary offices by hanging signboards. But in reality, many institutions do not have any renewal or registration. There is no sufficient open space anywhere, no designated training ground, or necessary security measures. Inexperienced people are also working as instructors in many institutions, whose own skills and legitimacy are also in question. When asked about this, Prof. Faruk Ahmed of ‘Ma Motor Driving School’, the only motor driving training institution licensed to establish and operate motor vehicle driving training schools, said – For a long time, more than 12 driving schools have been operating without the necessary licenses in Moulvibazar Court Road, Berirpar, Jugidor, Kulaura Road, Chandnighat, Shah Mostafa Road, Akhailura, Kusumbagh and Kudalipool areas of the city. In addition to being cheated, students coming for training are also at risk of road safety. Although the matter was reported to the concerned department, necessary legal action was not taken. When asked about this, Moulvibazar BRTA Motor Vehicle Inspector Md. Selim Hasan said – ‘Ma Motor Driving School’ is approved by the government. According to our records, no other driving school has a license. “Necessary legal action will be taken through a drive against illegal others.” Moulvibazar Traffic Department Traffic Police Inspector (Admin) Md. Kamrul Islam said – “Instructions have been given that legal action will be taken against those who illegally bring training vehicles on the road.” Meanwhile, conscious circles have demanded a quick investigation against illegally run driving schools, taking necessary legal action and conducting a coordinated drive by BRTA, district administration and traffic police to protect the interests of students.
