A human chain was held in Tongi to protest the attack on Bangla Edition’s Gazipur correspondent Mahbubur Rahman Jilani while performing his professional duties in Kaliakoir area of ​​Gazipur.
The human chain was organized at 11:30 am on Monday (May 18) at the College Gate area of ​​Tongi by the National Media Commission and local journalists. Leaders of various journalist organizations, human rights activists and local dignitaries participated in it.
The human chain, chaired by National Media Commission President AKM Azizul Haque, was attended by the organization’s General Secretary Md. Kalimullah Iqbal, Organizing Secretary Kamal Khan, Senior Vice President Mosleh Uddin Bachchu, Sports and Cultural Affairs Secretary of Gazipur District Journalists’ Unity Council and Managing Editor of Bhorer Alo newspaper Ibrahim Khalil, Former General Secretary of Gacha Journalists Club Faizul Rahman Arif, Organizing Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North of National Journalists’ Association Abu Raihan Khan, President of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Association Gazi Mamun, Secretary General of Bangladesh Sammilit Journalists Society BM Ashiq Hasan, Co-Organizing Secretary Mahbub Alam Jewel, Human Rights Editor Roman Sheikh, Tongi Press Club member and Tongi correspondent of Jayayadin newspaper Rajibul Islam Rajib, and Citizens for Good Governance (Sujon) Gazipur Metropolitan President Md. Monirul Islam Rajib and Office Secretary Md. Zahirul Islam Hamid and many others.
The speakers at the human chain said that attacks and harassment on journalists are a threat to the freedom of the media. Attacks on a journalist while performing their professional duties are unacceptable in any way. They demanded immediate identification of those involved in the attack, prompt arrest and exemplary punishment.
The speakers also said that journalists play an important role in publishing true and objective news. Therefore, the administration must take more effective steps to ensure the safety of journalists. Otherwise, they warned that stricter programs will be announced in the future.
At the end of the human chain, the journalists present expressed their solidarity in demanding that those involved in the attack be brought to justice quickly.
