A case has been filed with Sherpur Sadar Police Station under the Special Powers Act of 1974 against 20 fertilizer dealers in Sherpur Sadar Upazila on charges of selling government-allocated fertilizer in the black market, creating an artificial crisis and causing financial loss to the government.
The plaintiff in the case is Sherpur Sadar Upazila Agricultural Extension Officer Md. Anwar Hossain. The case statement states that on June 24, Agricultural Extension Officer Md. Anwar Hossain and Agriculture Officer Nusrat Jahan went to inspect various fertilizer dealer shops in Sadar Upazila including New Market, Raghunath Bazar, Notun Bus Stand in Sherpur city in a government vehicle. During the inspection, various irregularities were detected as per Section 9(2) of the Fertilizer Management Act, 2006. At that time, the register and cash memos of the dealers concerned were seized and verified, and information about widespread irregularities was found, the case statement states.
According to the complaint, the accused dealers sold 4,412 metric tons of urea fertilizer (worth about 119.1 million 24 thousand taka), 821 metric tons of DAP fertilizer (worth about 172.41 million taka), 134 metric tons of TSP fertilizer (worth about 361.8 thousand taka) and other fertilizers worth about 344.0 thousand taka in the black market in the hope of making more profit. As a result, an artificial crisis was created in the market and farmers were forced to buy fertilizer at a price higher than the price fixed by the government, the case alleges.
The case further states that due to the activities of the accused, farmers of various unions of Sherpur Sadar Upazila have suffered greatly and the government has suffered a financial loss of several crores of taka.
The accused in the case are Md. Rasedul Islam, Sufia Begum, Md. Rafiqul Islam, Suborna Saha Roy, Mir Delwar Hossain, Mariam Akhter Munni, Md. Farhad Ali, Ilyas Ali, Taposh Nandi, Kamrun Nahar Hashem, Sirajul Islam, Chamidul Islam Faraji, Borhan Uddin, Rezaul Karim, Mazaharul Islam, Anwar Hossain, Moniruzzaman Monir, Prashant Saha, Md. Ratan Mia and Md. Badsha Mia.
The case has been registered under the Special Powers Act of 1974 at Sherpur Sadar Police Station (Case No. 25(1), Date: 22 July 2026). The case is currently under investigation.
