Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam said that everyone’s sense of responsibility and awareness is essential for the planned Dhaka city. For that, the policy makers, city planners and everyone in the society have to work from their respective positions. Everyone must actively participate in meeting the challenge of a livable Dhaka. He said this while addressing a seminar on “Green Areas of Dhaka City and its Political Economy” at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) today. He said that whenever any plan or public policy is implemented in Bangladesh, whenever it goes against someone’s interest, he takes a stand against that plan. This type of mentality must be avoided for the good of the community as a whole. At that time, the minister referred to the Dhaka Details Area Plan or DAP and said that as an employee of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he has performed the duties given by the Prime Minister with utmost diligence and sincerity. Stating that other civic facilities including living space, open space, playground, green and water areas have been ensured in the formulation of DAP, the minister said that everyone including journalists and civil society should come forward to implement a good plan. He also said that we have to think about how much the population will be inside Dhaka, what civic facilities are required for them. The local government minister said that if 20,000 people live in a place where 5,000 people are provided with civic amenities, then how can livability be maintained. We have to take these things into consideration.
As Dhaka is the most populous city in the world, the pressure on this city should be reduced, he said, Dhaka cannot be compared with any other city in the world. With the number of people entering Dhaka every day, it is a big challenge for us to protect open spaces, playgrounds or green areas. At this time, the minister said that the negative impact of climate change is affecting Bangladesh and said that Bangladesh is not able to reach the desired target due to the non-release of financial grants from the developed world. Regarding the handover of canals in the capital from WASA to the City Corporation, the minister said that the citizens of the capital are more relieved than before as a result of his ministry’s initiatives to remove waterlogging. He also said that the country and society will move forward if we fulfill our respective responsibilities. Mentioning that it will be possible to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh by the father of the nation if he works responsibly to his own conscience, the minister said, we can build a beautiful society only through the participation of all.
