Tawhid Hossain Sarkar: Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation Central President Advocate Atiqur Rahman and Central General Secretary Laskar Md. Taslim, in a joint statement, strongly protested and condemned the government’s decision to increase electricity prices by an average of 16.68 percent at the consumer level and 19.85 percent at the wholesale level.
The leaders said that this price hike, which took effect from June 1, will further increase the cost of living of the country’s workers, low-income people, farmers, small businessmen and general consumers. The common people are already under extreme economic pressure due to the rise in daily necessities. In the meantime, the increase in electricity prices will create a new crisis in public life.
They also said that it is not acceptable to blame the general public for the inefficiency, waste and irregularities in the electricity generation and supply system. The increase in electricity prices will have a negative impact on the industrial and manufacturing sectors, which will increase production costs and create new pressure on commodity prices. This will make the lives of the working people more miserable.
The two leaders urged the government to immediately cancel the decision to increase the electricity price, taking into account the suffering and economic reality of the common people, and maintain the previous price. At the same time, effective steps should be taken to protect the interests of the people by ensuring transparency, accountability and good governance in the electricity sector.
The Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation believes that any decision taken without considering the opinions and interests of the people cannot be beneficial for the country’s economy and social stability in the long run. Therefore, the government is being urged to reconsider this decision immediately.
