Awareness rally held at BMU on International Thalassemia Day

A colorful awareness rally was held at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on the occasion of International Thalassemia Day.

The rally started at 7:30 am today from Battala of BMU under the joint initiative of the Department of Hematology, Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology and Department of Transfusion Medicine.

Honorable Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui was present as the chief guest at the rally. In his speech, he said that there is no alternative to increasing public awareness, timely screening and safe blood transfusion to prevent thalassemia. He emphasized on taking coordinated initiatives to prevent the disease.

BMU Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, President of Hematology Society of Bangladesh Professor Dr. Amin Lutful Kabir, General Secretary Associate Professor Dr. Md. Adnan Hasan Masud, Chairman of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Department Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Karim and Chairman of Transfusion Medicine Department Professor Dr. Mosa. Ayesha Khatun.

The speakers said in their speeches that Thalassemia is a preventable hereditary blood disease. The spread of this disease can be prevented to a large extent through proper awareness, pre-marital screening and timely diagnosis. They also emphasized on ensuring quality treatment and safe blood for thalassemia patients.
Participants from various levels including teachers, doctors, trainees, students, patients and their guardians of the concerned departments were present at the rally. The organizers expressed the hope that such awareness activities will play an important role in preventing thalassemia and increasing public awareness.
