Two women trafficked in India have returned home via Benapole after serving their sentences on special travel permits. The Indian immigration authorities handed them over through the Benapole International Checkpost on Tuesday afternoon, May 12, said Benapole Immigration Inspector (Investigation) Syed Mortaza Ali.
The returnees are Happy Khan (43), daughter of the deceased Ali Hossain Khan of Khezur Bariya village in Bagerhat district, and Maria Howlader (26), daughter of Kanchan Howlader.
Benapole Immigration Inspector (Investigation) Syed Mortaza Ali said that lured by a good job, they went to India at night in 2023 through smugglers through the border. There, they stayed in New Delhi and worked from home. On December 11 last year, Delhi Police arrested them on charges of illegal entry and sent them to court. The court sent them to Dum Dum Central Jail on charges of illegal entry. There they served 5 months in prison. After completing the immigration formalities, they were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station. From there, the returnees will be handed over to a representative of the human rights organization Jessore Justice and Care to be delivered to their families, said the police officer.
