A young man named A. Rahim (30) was killed in a drone attack in the Russia-Ukraine war in Fulbaria, Mymensingh. A. Rahim had joined the war as a Russian mercenary. The family is mourning the news of Rahim’s death.
A. Rahim was killed in a drone attack in the Russian-controlled Ukraine border area on May 2. Another Bangladeshi and a Nigerian youth died in the same incident.
The deceased Abdur Rahim is the son of Azizul Haque of Putijana Namapara village in Fulbaria upazila. The Rahims are three brothers. He is the eldest son of the family. Rahim was the only earning member of the family. Rahim’s father Azizul Haque is the vice-president of Ward No. 2 Jamaat of Putijana Union.
Mosha Afroza Akhter, a member of the reserved women’s seat of the concerned Union Parishad, confirmed the death of A. Rahim in the Russia-Ukraine war. She said, Abdur Rahim is my relative. We want the government to quickly bring Rahim’s body back to the country.
According to family and local sources, Rahim went to Russia in October last year to restore his family’s well-being. Family members initially thought he was working in an organization there. Later, they learned that he had joined the Russian army on April 7 this year. Relatives also claim that he had kept the matter a secret from his family.
On Monday (May 11), at around 7 pm, Rahim’s friend Limon Dutta confirmed Rahim’s death to his family members through social media messenger. Limon himself was also working as a Russian soldier in the same camp. He was seriously injured in the attack and lost a leg and is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.
Locals said that Rahim was a calm and hard-working young man. He had migrated abroad in the hope of improving his family’s financial situation. But his death in the horrors of the war has cast a shadow of grief over the area.
The deceased A. Rahim’s mother Ramicha Khatun said, “My eldest son went abroad to restore the family’s prosperity. He was the only earner in my family. He himself died on the battlefield while trying to restore peace in the family. You bring my son, let me see the piece of my liver for the son.” Saying these words, he fainted.
The deceased’s father Azizul Haque said, Rahim joined the Russian army in April and trained for a month. After training for a month, he joined the war on May 1. After joining the war, Rahim was killed in a drone attack on May 2. Rahim hid this matter from Amado. If I had known, I would never have let him go there. Now everything is over for me. I will never get my son back. He demanded that the government make arrangements for us to see his body and bring the body back to the country quickly.
The deceased’s uncle Sirajul Islam said, Rahim is the eldest son in his family. They are three brothers. One is studying in a medical college, the other is studying in a madrasa. Rahim sold his father’s land and went to Russia to restore his family’s prosperity. He was the only male earner in the family.
Putijana UP member Aminul Islam Hira said, ‘The incident is very tragic and sad. I have inquired about the family of the deceased. If there is any kind of cooperation from the government, we will try to ensure it.’
Fulbaria Police Station OC Md. Rashedul Hasan said, I visited the scene after receiving information from various sources. However, we have not received a message from the government yet. We will provide the maximum assistance to the family of the deceased.
