Masud Rana, Kurigram :Â The closing and award ceremony of the Kurigram District Open Chess Championship has been held. The curtain of the competition came down with a grand ceremony at the meeting room of the District Sports Association on Saturday (June 27) afternoon.
The event was presided over by District Sports Association Member Secretary Professor Shafiqul Islam Bebu and was attended by Kurigram Agricultural University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Rashedul Islam as the chief guest.
In his speech as the chief guest, Professor Dr. Rashedul Islam said, “Chess is not just a game, it develops intelligence and thinking. It is necessary to organize more such intellectual games to keep the young generation away from mobile addiction and drugs. I believe that this talent of Kurigram will one day make the district’s name shine at the national and international level.”
Speaking as a special guest at the event, District Council Administrator Sohel Hosnain Kaikobad said, “The District Council is always on the side of the positive activities of the youth. All kinds of cooperation will be provided to the District Sports Organization to strengthen the sports arena.”
Additional Superintendent of Police Mimtanur Rahman said in his speech, “There is no alternative to sports in building a healthy society. Chess teaches players patience and strategy, which is useful in every aspect of life.”
District Sports Association member Nazmul Huda Laku, senior journalist Yunus Ali, Sonali Aotit Club Kurigram General Secretary Wazed Ali Jhinuk and national chess judge Mojahidul Islam also spoke at the closing ceremony. The speakers emphasized on organizing regular chess events in Kurigram.
Muhtasim Fuad Jim won the championship in this exciting competition. Arifur Rahman Biplob was the first runner-up and Fahad Al Farabi was the second runner-up.
At the end of the ceremony, the guests presented medals and prizes to the top 15 winners, including the champion, runner-up. This initiative of the District Sports Organization was welcomed by the local sports and welfare society.
