A workshop titled “Speed Reduction Through Infrastructure Design” was held on July 9, 2026, from 9 am to 4 pm at The Peninsula Chittagong Hotel in the city, under the joint initiative of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and World Resources Institute (WRI). 15 engineers of CCC and 10 police officers participated in the workshop. Since 2022, CCC has been working in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) to make Chittagong’s roads safer. The workshop was organized with the aim of enhancing the capacity of the participants in designing safe roads for all users, including pedestrians.
Mr. Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan, Additional Commissioner of Police, was present at the inaugural session of the workshop. (Traffic), CMP, Chittagong; Acting CEO and Secretary of CMP Mohammad Ashraful Amin and Mohammad Liaqat Ali Khan, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic-South), CMP, Chittagong.
At the inauguration ceremony, Additional Police Commissioner Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan said that CMP will cooperate with CMP and BIGRS partners to make the roads safer.

To prevent accidents, we are going to implement speed limit guidelines in the city. At this time, he requested drivers and road users to follow traffic rules.
Acting CEO and Secretary of CMP Mohammad Ashraful Amin said, “CMP is working with various stakeholders to make the roads safer. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based traffic management system will be launched at 59 places in the city and initially the pilot project will be implemented at two intersections. Along with the AI cameras, the CMC will install road signs, pedestrian crossing facilities and other necessary infrastructure. He also said that if road users do not follow traffic laws, it is not possible for the CMC and CMP alone to make the roads safe.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic-South) Mohammad Liaquat Ali Khan said that the work of the police on the roads is to control discipline. However, the responsibility of road construction and maintenance lies with the City Corporation. If both the institutions work together, we can easily make the roads of Chittagong safe.
The technical sessions of the workshop were conducted by Vital Strategies Senior Technical Advisor Myrik Pala, WRI Indonesia Urban Resilience and Knowledge Management Manager Retno Wihanesta, and WRI Architects Farzana Islam Toma and Arina Tahnim. The sessions discussed the relationship between speed and road safety, principles of safe road design, international practices in speed control, and practical strategies and standards for infrastructure-based speed management.
Experts noted that excessive speed is one of the leading causes of death and serious injury in road accidents. High vehicle speeds not only increase the risk of accidents, but also make the consequences of accidents more severe, especially for pedestrians, cyclists, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. They also said that, in addition to effective law enforcement, safe road design and automated speed control infrastructure can play an important role in encouraging drivers to drive at a safe speed and ensuring the safety of all road users.
An important part of the workshop was a team-based design exercise, where participants assessed different types of road environmental conditions and found appropriate infrastructure solutions to reduce vehicle speeds. Through this exercise, participants had the opportunity to apply the topics discussed throughout the day to real-world road conditions.
At the end of the workshop, certificates were distributed among the participants.
