Touhid Hossain Sarkar: “Committees will be formed in every sector against injustice and corruption.””Even if the right to form a trade union is not granted, the Workers’ Welfare Federation will work in every sector. The movement for the realization of workers’ rights, against corruption, extortion and occupation will continue.”
With Dhaka Electricity Supply Company PLC (DESCO) labor leaders. Chief guest Hibebe said this at the exchange of views meeting.
Advocate Atiqur Rahman is the central president of the Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation.
The meeting was held at 5 pm on Friday (May 16) in the hall of the central office of the Workers’ Welfare Federation in the capital.
In his speech as the chief guest, Advocate Atiqur Rahman said that a kind of discriminatory labor policy has been introduced through the outsourcing system. Although middlemen benefit from it, real workers are being deprived of their fair rights. He said, “Employing temporary workers for a long time in permanent jobs and not making them permanent is against the labor law. As a result, workers are being deprived of bonuses, allowances, retirement benefits and other rights.”
He also said that there are wage disparities among outsourcing workers, restrictions on trade unionization, inconsistencies in determining working hours, and a lack of safety equipment in risky work. In addition, workers are unable to organize due to nepotism in hiring and weak leadership.
Regarding the recent amendment to the labor law, he said that the opportunity to have “10 percent external leadership” in trade unions is hindering the development of new leadership. Even after retirement, many are creating a kind of authoritarian environment by leading the union. He said, “To ensure democratic practices in trade unions, opportunities for change in leadership must be created.”
Criticizing the proposal to limit the number of trade unions, he said that while there was previously a consensus among the parties concerned on five unions, the new proposal has reduced it to three, which is against the views of the workers.
Advocate Atiqur Rahman said, “
“No injustice will be tolerated. Public opinion will be created through the media and socially to achieve the rights of workers. Although work was limited in the past due to various obstacles, now the organization will be activated in every sector.”
The Federation’s Central General Secretary Laskar Mohammad Taslim was also present during the event.
