Will blend in with people, will lead with them – LGRD Minister to Deputy Commissioners

Today, Tuesday (05 May 2026), various important issues related to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives were discussed at the sixth session of the District Commissioner (DC) Conference 2026 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium. Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke as the chief guest in the session. State Minister Mir Shahe Alam was present as the special guest.

Speaking as the chief guest at the session, Mirza Fakhrul said, “You are grassroots leaders. You will blend in with the people, be with them, and lead with them.” He said that administrators have a big role in building the nation. In addition to conveying the government’s vision and goals to the people, he urged the Deputy Commissioners to do real public welfare work.

The minister also said that the government will organize local government elections as soon as possible. He said, “Institutions must be strengthened through decentralization. The stronger the local government, the stronger the democracy will be.” He also emphasized on bringing innovation in the governance of the country.

Speaking as a special guest, Mir Shahe Alam emphasized the implementation of the Prime Minister’s priority programs. He said that currently, 18 out of 64 district administrators and 1 out of 8 divisional commissioners are women, which is a reflection of the government’s commitment to women empowerment. On the occasion of the upcoming Eid al-Adha, he called for all preparations to be made following the Prime Minister’s instructions. He especially directed the concerned city corporations and organizations to work in a coordinated manner to ensure the removal of sacrificial waste within 12 hours.

At the beginning of the session, Director General of Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Inspection Division Md. Mahmudul Hasan, ndc, gave a presentation related to the ministry. Later, Secretary of the Local Government Division Md. Shahidul Hasan and Secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Mohang Shawkat Rashid Chowdhury delivered brief speeches. Also present in the session were Dhaka WASA Managing Director Md. Aminul Islam, Director General of the Bangladesh Rural Development Board AKM Tarek, Registrar and Director General of the Cooperatives Department Md. Selim Fakir, NDC, Additional Secretary of the Development Division Dr. Abu Nasr Mohammad Abdullah, Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department Md. Belal Hossain and Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department Md. Abdul Awal.

The session, chaired by Secretary of the Cabinet Division Nasimul Gani, was attended by Divisional Commissioners of eight divisions of the country and Deputy Commissioners of 64 districts. In the question and answer session, the Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners highlighted various problems and challenges of their respective areas.
