Patients, their relatives and hospital staff have been in extreme distress as water supply has been cut off in the Rajapur Upazila Health Complex of Jhalakathi for four consecutive days. Medical services and daily hygiene activities are being disrupted due to the water crisis.
The hospital authorities said that around 80 patients, including children, are currently admitted to the 50-bed hospital. However, due to the breakdown of the water pump, there is a severe water crisis throughout the hospital. The matter has been reported to the Health Engineering Department and they have already started repairing the pump.
It was seen on the spot that most of the water taps in the hospital are dry. The relatives of the patients are forced to bring water in buckets from a distant tube well and use it. The admitted patients and women and children have suffered the most.
The patient’s relatives have complained that for the past four days, it has not been possible to bathe, use the toilet and perform necessary cleaning properly. This has not only increased the suffering of the patients, but also created health risks.
Meanwhile, for a temporary solution, the contracting company of the Health Engineering Department and mechanics from Khulna are trying to supply water by installing a pump in a pond next to the hospital. However, many have expressed concerns that using the pond water may increase the health risks for the patients.
