Md. Moniruzzaman:

The administration has imposed Section 144 in Tarakanda upazila of Mymensingh due to fear of clashes between two factions of BNP. This has created anxiety among the locals.

Tarakanda Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Aminul Islam issued this order on Sunday (April 19) afternoon.

Confirming the veracity of the news, he said that Section 144 has been imposed to control the law and order situation as two factions of the local BNP announced opposing programs in the same area at the same time. It will be in force from 12 noon to 8 pm today.

Tarakanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed said that the police are working to control any kind of unpleasant situation. The situation is normal at present.

Local sources said that recently, the followers of Mufti Mahmudullah, the opposition MP from Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency, were in a dispute with the followers of Motahar Hossain Talukder, the defeated BNP candidate and joint convener of North District BNP, on various issues. As a result of this dispute, a fight recently broke out between the two parties. In this, a local Jubo Dal leader named Riyad got into an argument on the side of the 11-party alliance MP. At one stage of the argument, a scuffle broke out and injured Jubo Dal leader Riyad, a follower of Mymensingh Metropolitan Jubo Dal General Secretary Jobair Hossain Shakil.

Shakil’s followers announced a protest march program at Tarakanda Upazila headquarters today in protest of that incident. On this news, Motahar Hossain’s supporters announced a counter-program, which created tension between the two parties. The upazila administration imposed Section 144 fearing a deterioration in the law and order situation.

Sources said that one of the two conflicting parties, in the last parliamentary election, defied the party’s decision and took a stand against the paddy sheaf. Due to these reasons, BNP lost the seat due to a small number of votes. Due to this, there was anger and dissatisfaction among the local BNP since the election.
