Rare ‘Malayan Night Heron’ recovered in Kaptai during operation

Members of the Forest Department have recovered a rare species of Malayan Night Heron (scientific name: Gorsachius melanolophus), also known as the ‘Tiger Bittern’, while being smuggled in Kaptai, Rangamati. The operation was conducted on Tuesday (May 5) at around 12 noon in the Bayangchhari Ghat area of ​​Kaptai Union based on a secret tip-off.

Kaptai Range Officer Mamunur Rahman led the operation. Forest Department Office Assistant Osman Gani said that the smugglers abandoned the bird after sensing its presence and fled. Later, the bird was rescued and taken into the custody of the Forest Department.

The range officer said that arrangements have been made for the rescued bird to be treated. Further action will be taken as per the instructions of higher officials.

Incidentally, this medium-sized heron species, which roams the forests of South and East Asia, is also found in the deep forests of Kaptai National Park. Being rare and valuable, the species is protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act.
