Mashahid Ahmed :
Welcoming the arrival of the Prime Minister on June 17-2026, at the Moulvibazar Government High School grounds in Moulvibazar, the founding chairman of the traditional social and humanitarian organization Sheikh Borhan Uddin (R.H.) Islamic Society (BIS) Moulvibazar, M Muhibur Rahman Muhib, held a press conference at the Moulvibazar Press Club on June 15 morning, making five demands including the establishment of the Moulvibazar Government Medical College, protection of small and large haors in the district, opening of Shamshernagar Airport, establishment of public and agricultural universities, construction of Moulvibazar bypass road, double and increase of the Dhaka-Sylhet Railway, etc. The founder chairman of the society of Sheikh Borhan Uddin (R.H.) Islamic Society (BIS) Moulvibazar. Nurul Islam Mahbub, the patron of the organization, answered various questions from the journalists. Present were – BIS life member Delwar Hossain, Executive Council member Redyan Ahmed Chhami. In a written statement, he said – We have been agitating since 2017 for the establishment of a government medical college in Moulvibazar. That demand has become a mass demand today. Our programs are ongoing at home and abroad, including roundtable meetings, seminars, discussion meetings, memorandum submission, district-wide mass signature programs, and human chains, demanding the establishment of a government medical college at the 250-bed Sadar Hospital in Moulvibazar. We are holding written and oral protests at various places. We are continuing the movement peacefully. In all these programs, everyone is in solidarity with the logical demand for the establishment of a government medical college in Moulvibazar. Moulvibazar is a progressive and economically prosperous area. The forestry and mineral resources industry, tourism industry, tea industry, and agar industry of this district are making an important contribution to the government’s huge revenue collection. Remittances sent by expatriates have enriched the country’s economy. This district needs more development in the education and health sectors. This district is rich in tourism. There are many talented students in this district who cannot study in private medical schools due to lack of money. Due to the lack of government universities, a large number of students cannot pursue higher education even after passing higher secondary every year. As a result, the dropout rate of students is increasing. There is no medical college for about 2.5 million people in 7 upazilas. It is not possible to treat many terminally ill patients in the 250-bed hospital in Moulvibazar, due to which many terminally ill patients die on the way to Sylhet or Dhaka. Considering the overall situation, we humbly request that the process of establishing a medical college in Moulvibazar be started immediately. The contribution of the haor region to the geography and economy of Bangladesh is of particular significance. The magnificent vast water bodies of the haor during the rainy season are the largest source of natural fish in the country. During the dry season, these haors become the grain storehouses of Bangladesh. The haor region is constantly playing a role in controlling the country’s weather and climate, as well as preventing global warming. Our Moulvibazar is created with a wonderful combination of haor-river-tea garden-fountain-hilly hill-channel-bill. The role of the lungs of the district’s landscape is played by the hills and forests surrounded by tea gardens in the upstream. And the role of the kidneys is played by the 30 small and large haors in the downstream region. Effective steps must be taken to protect these haors. For the progress of business and trade in Bangladesh, the tourism industry of Sylhet division should be developed, to make it attractive to foreign tourists and to facilitate the travel of those arriving at the international tea auction center, I strongly demand that the historical Shamshernagar Airport, which is surrounded by memories of World War II and inhabited by the expatriate population, be opened for international and domestic direct flights. Urgent steps must be taken to free our communication system from its poor condition, especially the development of regional roads and railways. The double line of the Dhaka-Sylhet railway and the bypass road to relieve traffic congestion in the district headquarters have become essential to alleviate the suffering of the people. We respectfully recall the contribution of former Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman, a talented son of this district during the BNP government, to the overall development of our Moulvibazar. There is no alternative to higher education in building a developed and prosperous nation. The people of the country are aware that your government has taken multifaceted steps to develop education, including increasing the provision in the education sector, which undoubtedly deserves praise. The current government has started working to fundamentally change the country’s education system in the shortest possible time in its first term of office. We believe that by taking this initiative, educational opportunities have been made available to the marginalized population of the country. We want the implementation of this commendable initiative of the government to enrich the education and health sectors of Moulvibazar on priority basis. Our Moulvibazar has various glorious histories to be proud of. In order to maintain that glory of history, the young generation must be made competent and skilled. Youth are the tools of social change. We, the people of Moulvibazar district, unite in the same spirit and demand these vital demands of the people of Moulvibazar.
