Coastal Correspondent: People of 7 villages in Mirzaganj upazila of the district are suffering endlessly due to broken bridges. Accidents are constantly happening to the locals while crossing. The bridge built over the Dushimir canal in Jagarpur area of Andua village of Ghatak in the upazila has now become a death trap. Due to lack of renovation for a long time, the middle cast of the bridge has fallen off and the rods have come out. Even though attempts have been made to cross the collapsed part with wooden planks, there is a risk of a major accident at any time.

When we go to the ground, it is seen that this bridge, which is about 60 feet long, was built by the Upazila LGRD in 2005. But no renovation work has been done here for 21 years after its construction. As a result, the cast of various parts of the bridge has gradually started collapsing due to lack of maintenance. Currently, the main part of the middle of the bridge has broken, creating a huge hole and the iron rods inside have completely come loose. Residents of Andua, Kumarkhola, Mansurabad, Chingaria, Piprakhali, Sundra-Kalikapur and Kalagachia villages of Uttar Ghatak commute to local markets, ghats and upazila headquarters every day over this bridge, risking their lives. The most affected are the young students of local educational institutions. Apart from this, the rural people are facing difficulties as there is no alternative way to take sick and elderly patients to the hospital on an emergency basis. As goods vehicles or vans-rickshaws cannot ply over the bridge, farmers are unable to take their products to the market on time and are suffering huge economic losses.

Local residents said that if the bridge is not rebuilt or renovated quickly, it may collapse at any time, causing major loss of life. They have urgently sought the immediate intervention of the local administration and the concerned authorities to get rid of this extreme suffering and keep the rural communication system functioning.

Upazila Engineer Chandan Kumar Chakraborty said that a proposal has been sent to the concerned authorities for the construction of the bridge. The bridge will be constructed if the budget is approved.
