The upazila administration has returned 1 crore 25 lakh 42 thousand 976 taka to the treasury, ensuring maximum savings of government money in the Sundari Canal re-excavation project in Basail, Tangail.
According to upazila administration sources, 1 crore 43 lakh 52 thousand 708 taka was allocated for the re-excavation of 4.2 kilometers of Sundari Bike Canal from Habla Uttarpara to Aroha Jibeneshwar via Chaishat Bill. Even after completing 1.6 kilometers of work while maintaining the prescribed quality standards of the project, a total of 1 crore 25 lakh 42 thousand 976 taka remained unspent. Later, that money was deposited in the government treasury as per the rules. Along with the excavation, initiatives have been taken to plant trees on the banks of the canal to maintain the balance of the environment and conserve the reservoir. As part of this, 100 saplings of different species of trees were planted along the Sundari Bike Canal. The successful implementation of the entire project was supervised round the clock by Basail Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Iqbal Hossain, Project Implementation Officer Saiful Islam, Upazila Engineer Kazi Fattaur Rahman and responsible tag officials.
Farmer Abul Mia said, digging this canal has benefited us a lot. We can now cultivate mustard at the right time. Earlier, when water came, the water could not come out. Now that the canal has been dug, the water will go out easily. A new possibility has been created among our farmers to produce three crops a year.
Chairman of Habla Union Parishad Khorshed Alam said, digging this canal has benefited farmers. Farmers can cultivate three crops. Earlier, when there was water, waterlogging would occur. As a result of this canal, waterlogging will no longer occur. Now farmers can cultivate crops at the right time. On behalf of the local people, I thank the UNO for returning the money after the partial completion of the project work in Basail.
Basail Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Iqbal Hossain said, while ensuring proper use of government funds and maximum savings, 1.6 kilometers of the project have been implemented while maintaining the quality of work. Unspent Tk 1 crore 25 lakh 42 thousand 976 has been returned to the treasury. He expressed the hope that the benefits of re-excavation of this canal will be enjoyed by local farmers for a long time.
