Fishermen’s meeting held in Kaptai to promote conservation of Halda-Karnaphuli river fisheries

A motivational meeting was held in Kaptai with fishermen to create public awareness about the natural fish breeding grounds and conservation of fish resources of Halda River and the connected Karnaphuli River. The meeting was organized at Kaptai Upazila Auditorium Hallroom on Monday (June 15) at 11 am with the slogan “Follow the Fisheries Act, Protect the Halda River”. Kaptai Upazila Executive Officer Md. Raihanul Islam presided over the meeting and Rangamati District Fisheries Officer Md. Mizanur Rahman was present as the chief guest. The meeting was moderated by Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md. Ershad Ullah, and special guests included former Kaptai Upazila Parishad Chairman Dildar Hossain, Upazila Assistant Information Officer Md. Delwar Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Ahsan Habib, Upazila Cooperative Officer Md. Nazmul Hasan and Field Government Officer Md. Nasir Uddin Sohel. Media personnel and fishermen from different areas of Kaptai Upazila were present. The speakers said that fishing is completely prohibited for six months from February to July during the breeding season in 17 canals connected to the Halda River. At the same time, fishing is prohibited for five months from March to July in four rivers adjacent to the Halda River—Karnaphuli, Shikalbaha, Chandkhali and Sangu Rivers. The speakers urged fishermen to comply with these restrictions and emphasized the need for everyone to play a conscious role in protecting natural fish breeding grounds. This motivational meeting was held under the management of the Halda River Natural Fish Breeding Area Development and Management Project (Phase II), Department of Fisheries, Chittagong and organized by the Kaptai Upazila Senior Fisheries Office.
In the speech of the chief guest and president, the fishermen were urged to follow the law to protect the river and fish resources. At the same time, they requested the media workers to play an important role in raising public awareness in this regard.
