Jessore Police have arrested Chittagong’s top criminal David Emon along with three accomplices while fleeing to India.
They were arrested from Jhumjhumpur area of ​​Jessore town around 3:45 am on Wednesday. Later, they were handed over to Chittagong Police at 10 am.
Jessore Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md. Mirajul Islam confirmed the matter.
He said that as per the requisition of Chittagong Police, 9 teams of Jessore DB Police and Kotwali Police station took up position in Jhumjhumpur area of ​​Jessore-Dhaka Highway in Jessore Sadar Upazila at around 3:45 am today. At that time, a check post was set up there and David Emon along with three accomplices were arrested. Later, they were handed over to Chittagong Police at 10 am.
Additional Superintendent of Police Mirajul Islam said that during the initial interrogation, the detainees said that they had come to Jessore to cross the border and go to India.
According to police sources, David Emon is the son of Md. Musa from Kanchannagar area of ​​Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong. He once lived a normal life in the area, but later joined the notorious terrorist Sajjad Group of Chittagong. After that, his name was involved in various crimes including multiple murders in the city. Several pictures of him holding a foreign pistol were also spread on social media.
Police claim that at one stage, David Emon became known as the ‘second in command’ of the Sajjad Group. Later, he left the country and stayed in Dubai, but it is alleged that he used to demand extortion from Chittagong businessmen over the phone. According to police, there have also been incidents of attacks and shootings on businesses and houses if the extortion was not paid.
Recently, David Emon’s name also came up in the attack on an internet service provider called DDN in Chawkbazar area of ​​Chittagong city. On July 13, an armed group of 15 to 20 people entered the office of the company and vandalized computers, mobile phones and furniture. At that time, officials and employees were intimidated.
According to police and case report sources, earlier on July 11, a person calling the owner of DDN on WhatsApp, identifying himself as ‘David Emon’, demanded a one-time ransom of Tk 2 crore and then Tk 1 million per month. When he refused to pay the ransom, he was threatened in various ways.
Two days later, the DDN office was attacked. The attackers vandalized various equipment including computers, laptops, printers, fingerprint machines, furniture and glass doors. The case alleges that about Tk 1.5 million was lost.
In addition, there are allegations that Tk 47,000, three Android mobile phones, a Canon printer and the shoulder bag of the company’s director Ariful Islam, who was in the office drawer, were taken away. The case report mentions that the bag contained about Tk 3.5 million for paying salaries to employees.
After a case was filed in this incident, RAB and police conducted a drive and arrested 20 people. CCTV footage of the attack also showed a group of armed men entering the office of the organization and vandalizing it.
Earlier, in a briefing on Wednesday, CMP Additional Police Commissioner Muhammad Faisal Ahmed said that intelligence and technical teams were working to identify David Emon’s location. A special operation was underway to arrest him and other members of the gang.
