Md. Nur Islam Nayan: The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 9 women into Bangladesh through the Bhaigad border in Birampur upazila of Dinajpur. The BGB claims that an attempt was made to send them to Bangladesh with the help of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). However, the attempt was thwarted by the activities of BGB members and local residents. Later, the women returned to Indian territory. After the incident, the BGB has intensified vigilance and patrols in the border area.
The incident took place at around 4:30 am on Saturday (July 25) in the 20-S area of ​​the main border pillar number 291 of the Bhaigad border under the Ghasuria BOP of Birampur upazila.
Ghasuria BOP Company Commander T. Alam said that an attempt was made to smuggle 9 women into Bangladesh from the area adjacent to the Serampur border in India in the early hours of the morning. BGB members on duty at the border quickly reached the spot and prevented them from entering Bangladesh. At that time, local villagers also cooperated with the BGB. Later, the women returned to Indian territory.
According to locals, they rushed to the spot after hearing the BGB’s warning whistle in the morning. When they went there, they saw some women near the border. When the locals took up positions with the BGB members, the attempt to cross the border was unsuccessful.
Shukur Ali, a member of the local Katla Union Parishad, said, “At dawn, some women tried to enter Bangladesh. Seeing the presence of the BGB and locals, they returned. Later, there was a slight increase in the presence of BSF members on the other side of the border, which created temporary tension, but no untoward incident occurred.”
According to the BGB, although the presence of BSF members increased on the Indian side of the border around 7:30 am, the situation quickly normalized as both sides remained in their respective positions.
Ghasuria BOP Company Commander T. Alam said, “The BGB is on the highest alert to prevent any person from illegally entering Bangladesh through the border. Regular patrolling and surveillance at the border have been further strengthened.”
No official statement from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was received on the incident till the time of writing this report.
