Arakan Army abducts 5 fishermen along with trawler from Teknaf coast

Mohammad Sohel, Senior Reporter Cox’s Bazar : The Myanmar armed group Arakan Army (AA) has abducted five fishermen along with a trawler that was going to fish in the Bay of Bengal from the Teknaf coast of Cox’s Bazar. Abul Kalam, General Secretary of Kayukkhali Ghat Boat Owners’ Association of Teknaf Municipality, confirmed the matter on Monday morning.
It is learnt that the five abducted fishermen are residents of the Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhia-Teknaf. They were caught by members of the Arakan Army in the area adjacent to the Myanmar border while fishing in the sea.
The abducted fishermen are – Salam Nur (31), Md. Ayub (37), Md. Azizullah (30), Syed Hossain (25) and Md. Ayub (24).
Abul Kalam, general secretary of the Boat Owners’ Association, said, “We have received information that five fishermen were abducted along with a trawler that was going to fish in the sea. The matter has been reported to the concerned authorities. The sudden abduction of fishermen has spread panic in the coastal fishing villages.”
Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) SM Anik Chowdhury said, “We have come to know about the incident. The matter is being investigated. We are contacting the concerned authorities and taking necessary steps to rescue the fishermen.”
Teknaf Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said, “We have heard about the abduction of fishermen along with the trawler. Detailed information about the incident is being collected. Higher authorities have been informed and necessary measures are being taken.”
Locals said that there have been incidents of fishermen being abducted in the border area of ​​Sagar at various times before. This new incident has caused concern and panic in the fishing villages of Teknaf.
