The corporation’s strategic activities in investing money in the appointment of contractors, including serious allegations of project irregularities and accepting bribes, have been questioned. His syndicate with local political influencers is now a cabal of embezzlement of crores of taka. In the past, the money-lending Don has become a strategist for such work.
An important area of ​​Ward No. 52 of Turag Police Station (formerly Harirampur Union) included in the region is Pabna Tech. The area is mainly deprived of urban amenities due to the poor condition of its infrastructure and unplanned urbanization.
Recently, there has been a lot of anger among the locals over a road construction project allocated by the City Corporation to construct a highway called Pabna Tag in the area.
Various irregularities and extortion have been alleged around the project.
Talking to the locals, it is learned that extortion ranging from 5,000 to 7,000 to 20,000 taka is being taken for the road. The Crime’s investigation found dozens of illegal receipts for such extortion from the locals. According to information, the gang has come out with a larger plan to extort crores of taka from more than 500 urban residents in the Tech area of ​​Pabna. It is known that an influential gang in the name of an unregistered social association called Baunia Paschim Para Kalyan Samity has taken up such extortion. Talking to the residents of the area, it is known that they will submit a public letter to the Chief Executive Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation to get a solution to this issue. As per the measurement of 20/1000 feet and work order, the road will be constructed within 1000 feet from the head of Pabna Tech adjacent to ECB Chattar Road via Baunia Bazar (as per the project). Such questionable activities have taken place in the area under the jurisdiction of the City Corporation of the project passed in 2021, with the help of the contractor’s Gari Mosi and the XN of Zone 6.
It has been alleged that the Baunia West Padha Kalyan Samiti has started work from the opposite direction by bribing the XN of the project by 8 lakh taka.
On going to the ground, it was found that such activities have been carried out by demanding 15 lakh taka from the owner of a multi-storey building called Baishakhi Tower to provide benefits.
If the work is done according to the work order of the project, the 1,000 feet of the road does not reach the Bishakhi Tower. Baunia Pascham Para Welfare Association President Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury and General Secretary Forid Uddin are using the Welfare Association as a shield as a novel method of extortion.
According to sources, the project was initially allocated 20/700 feet, later during the previous Awami League, at the request of local MP Habib, it was increased by another 300 feet to 1,000 feet. The Welfare Association illegally demolished about thirty to thirty-five houses adjacent to Bapnartek Road without any notice from the City Corporation or BAZUK. And from there, the trouble of the area residents began. If illegal work is stopped, there are also incidents of women being humiliated. In this regard, the Association President Rezzakul Haider Chowdhury told The Crime, “Once a brother is naked, why did you call again?”
However, Farid Uddin is reluctant to admit irregularities, he said that money is being raised for buying land for road work and for sewerage lines. However, when I went to his office several times with XN Harun and Rashid of Zone 6, I could not reach him even after calling him on his mobile phone repeatedly.
The constructed road is now 50 percent damaged due to potholes, cracks and collapses due to the suffering of the people. When I told this matter to Dhaka North City Corporation Executive Officer Mohammad Asaduzzaman, he asked me to file a written complaint. In that case, when the complaint is filed, it is received in the zone and stuck under the table. No investigation is being done.
