39 people have been admitted to the hospital after falling ill due to toxic gas leakage while cutting expired fire retardant cylinders at the Asfi Engineering Workshop in Golpukurpar area of ​​Mymensingh city. Mymensingh Development Authority (MDA) Chairman Motahar Hossain Talukder visited the scene to receive this news.
The MOOC chairman, who inspected the scene at 1:30 pm on Tuesday (June 30), assured that necessary steps would be taken in such incidents.
At that time, Mouk Chairman Motahar Hossain Talukder told reporters, “The incident was an unexpected accident, for which we express our regret. The City Corporation Administrator has already inspected the incident. I came here from Dhaka. We will inquire about those who were injured in the incident and those who are undergoing treatment, so that arrangements can be made so that they can return home safely.”
He said that an investigation committee will be formed after talking to the district administration to find out the responsibility of the incident. He also said that the details of the incident will be known in the investigation report. Along with this, necessary legal action will be taken after talking to the administration, the MOOC chairman also said.
During the visit, Metropolitan Youth League President Mozammel Haque Tutu, Volunteer League leader Atahar Talukder Ripon and others were present.
Earlier last evening, while cutting an old gas cylinder at Asfi Engineering Workshop, a sudden explosion occurred with a loud sound, spreading gas throughout the area. 39 people were admitted to the hospital after falling ill, confirmed Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Police Camp at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Jawaidul Haque.
However, he also said that 38 people have already recovered and been discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid, but one is still undergoing treatment in the ICU in a serious condition.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shibirul Islam said, the police and fire service, along with concerned parties, have inspected the scene. The incident was basically an accident, and the responsibility behind it has been investigated. The investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be taken if necessary.
