Md. Abdul Haque:
A live Russell’s Viper has been rescued again from the Harukandi area of the Padma River in Harirampur Upazila of Manikganj.
When the snake was caught in a fishing net early on Tuesday (June 30), a fisherman named Sujon safely preserved it and brought it to the local fishing pier without killing it. Later, upon receiving the news, the Upazila Forest Officer took the initiative to hand over the snake to the Forest Department.
According to local sources, Sujon, a fisherman from the Andharmanik area of the upazila, had put a net in the Padma River on Monday night to catch fish. While lifting the net early on Tuesday, he saw a live Russell’s Viper. Later, he kept the snake safely in a net without killing it and brought it to the Andharmanik fishing pier.
Fisherman Sujon said, ‘I caught the snake without killing it. I preserved it with the thought that if it can be used for any research in the country, I have preserved it.’
As news of the incident spread quickly in the area, curious people crowded the fishing pier. Later, the locals informed the upazila administration about the matter.
Harirampur Shyamal Nisarga activist Abid Hasan, a resident of the Padmapar, said that Russell’s viper was caught in this area several times about 2 years ago. At that time, the snake was seen in various places including fishermen’s nets and several people died due to snake bites. After a long time, the Russell’s viper was recovered alive, which has raised new concerns in the riverbank area.
Harirampur Upazila Forest Officer Md. Shariful Islam said, ‘The snake was brought with the help of Snake Rescue Team Bangladesh. Since it was recovered alive, the process of handing it over to the Forest Department is underway. Further action will be taken under the supervision of experts.’
