You cannot be a friend of the workers by increasing the price of oil, gas and electricity bills twice in three months.
This was said by the Federation’s central president, Advocate Atiqur Rahman, in his speech as the chief guest at the Union President, General Secretary and Trade Union Representative Conference organized by the Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation Natore District Branch.
The conference was held at the Natore District Jamaat-e-Islami office at 9 am on Saturday (June 6).
He also said that the working people played an important role behind the wave of change that has been created in the country. He said that the marginalized population stands for truth, justice and fairness. If we can unite them, it will be possible to achieve the desired social change.
He said that the main goal of establishing the Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation was to develop moral and ideological leadership in the working class society along with the movement for the realization of workers’ rights. He mentioned that this organization, established about 57 years ago, has been able to create a promising position in the working class arena today.
Advocate Atiqur Rahman said that workers in various sectors of the country are still deprived of fair rights, social security and dignity. The living standards of workers in various sectors including agriculture, garments, construction, transport, hotels, shops have not improved as desired. He questioned, “So many governments have changed, so many budgets have been made; but how much has the condition of workers improved?”
He said that the organization must be more active for fair wages, workplace safety, job security, trade union rights and improvement of living standards of workers. Stating that no kind of oppression or extortion will be accepted against workers, he said, “We will not oppress, nor will we tolerate oppression. Wherever injustice is done to workers, the Workers Welfare Federation will be the first to protest.”
He mentioned the increase in the prices of fuel oil, gas and electricity, and said that the life of working people has become more difficult amid the rise in commodity prices. He emphasized on controlling inflation and establishing fair rights to ensure the real welfare of workers and low-income people.
Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation Central Vice President Golam Rabbani, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Natore District Ameer and Central Majlish-e-Shura Member Professor Dr. Mir Rafiqul Islam, Workers’ Welfare Federation Central Assistant General Secretary Professor Abdul Matin and Central Organizing Secretary Professor Dr. Ziaul Haque spoke as special guests at the conference.
Bangladesh Workers’ Welfare Federation Natore District Branch President Md. Mostafizur Rahman presided over the conference. District Branch General Secretary Md. Aftab Uddin conducted the program.
Presidents, general secretaries and representatives of various trade unions of the district participated in it. The conference discussed the establishment of workers’ rights, expansion of organizational activities and future work plans.
