Coordination meeting held in Pirojpur on progress of village court activities

A bi-monthly coordination meeting was held on the progress of village court activities organized by the Pirojpur Sadar Upazila administration. The meeting was held in the Upazila Parishad meeting room on Thursday (May 14).

The meeting was chaired by Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mamunur Rashid and attended by Account Assistant Cum Computer Operator (AACO) / UP Secretaries of seven unions of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila.
The coordination meeting discussed in detail the current status of various cases coming to the village court, the case acceptance process and their speedy disposal. Highlighting the importance of village courts in delivering judicial services at the grassroots level, President Mamunur Rashid said, “It must be ensured that the common man gets justice in a short time and without harassment.” He provided necessary guidelines to the concerned to increase the rate of case acceptance and disposal.

He said, “According to the Village Court Act-2006, if minor civil and criminal disputes in our villages can be settled at the beginning, they cannot take the form of major conflicts or conflicts later. Currently, cases of monetary value up to 3 lakh taka can now be tried in the village court. The common people can present their complaints here without a lawyer for a nominal fee (10 and 20 taka), which is a revolutionary change in the judicial system.”

He also mentioned that there is no alternative to the village court to harass the common people. He called for making the village court more effective in land grabbing, collecting due money or resolving social conflicts.

The speakers at the meeting emphasized on raising awareness at the local level and preserving documents properly to increase the effectiveness of the village court.
