The terrible traffic jam on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway seems to be going nowhere. And now Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, the advisor in charge of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, has himself suffered the consequences of the traffic jam.
This Wednesday (October 8) morning, he got stuck in the Bahadurpur area of Ashuganj while visiting the road development project in the Brahmanbaria section.
In the morning, he reached Bhairab Railway Station in Kishoreganj by rail. From there, he set off for Brahmanbaria by road. On the way, he stopped for a short time at Hotel Ujanbhati in Ashuganj and then set off again. However, after going a little further, his convoy got stuck in a long traffic jam in the Bahadurpur area.
Since morning, a traffic jam of about 15 kilometers has been created from Sohagpur in Ashuganj to Shahbazpur in Sarail. As a result, hundreds of vehicles have been stuck on the highway for hours.
The Highway Police said that the traffic jam was caused by dumping of goods on one side of the road, slow repair work and potholes.
Locals said that the project to upgrade the approximately 51-kilometer road from Ashuganj River Port to Akhaura Land Port to four lanes has been going on for a long time. But the project work is progressing very slowly. As a result, numerous small and large potholes have been created in the approximately 12-kilometer area from Ashuganj Roundabout to Sarail-Bishwar Road intersection.
In this situation, the speed of vehicles has slowed down a lot, as a result of which it takes 4 to 6 hours to cross this section.
The work of filling the potholes hastily started from last Sunday (October 5) on the occasion of the arrival of Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan. As the work was carried out by closing one side, there has been severe traffic jam in this section for the last three days.
Ashuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khairul Alam said, “The advisor started his journey from Ashuganj to Sarail. On the way, he got stuck in a traffic jam in the Maitree Stambh area of Ashuganj. Currently, the police are working to control the situation.” Local residents say that such suffering has become a daily occurrence due to the development work. They have demanded that the project be completed quickly and the road be kept normal.
