Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh : The verdict in the gang rape and murder case of a minor girl in Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh has been announced. The verdict sentenced three accused to death and fined them Tk 200,000 each.
On the other hand, one defendant was sentenced to 10 years in prison because he was a minor. Judge Mejbah Uddin Ahmed at the Women and Children Abuse Prevention Tribunal.
Judge Sudipta Sarkar of the Child Violence Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict this afternoon, Thursday (July 9). The defendants sentenced to death are Arif Mia (19), Hasan Rakib (20) and Abu Saim (18). The other minor defendant is Maruf (16).
The verdict in this sensational case was announced in two separate courts in the presence of the defendants.
The truth of the news has been confirmed by the state’s lawyer in the case, Bazlul Karim Chowdhury, Special Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
At that time, he highlighted the judge’s observation in the verdict and said that on the day of the incident, the girl was raped and murdered in a deserted banana plantation on the banks of the Kangsha River, and then her head was buried under the ground to hide the body. Which the accused did with a cold mind. In this context, this verdict was announced to ensure justice.
Adv. Khandaker Badrul Alam was the state’s lawyer for the accused in the case, and Adv. Maqbul Hossain was the lawyer appointed for the accused.
Also present in the case was Adv. Mujibur Rahman as the additional public prosecutor.
After the verdict was announced, Nishamoni’s parents and relatives expressed satisfaction with the verdict and demanded its swift implementation. They also demanded that no other child be subjected to such atrocities.
However, Advocate Maqbul Hossain Sarkar, the lawyer for the accused, is dissatisfied with the verdict and has announced an appeal to the High Court. He said that the police forcibly recorded the statements of the accused. An appeal will be filed in the High Court against this verdict.
According to the news, on the afternoon of June 14, a child named Nishamoni was gang-raped and thrown into a river in Dhobaura. The next day, on June 15, Nishamoni’s father filed a case with Dhobaura Police Station, accusing unknown people. After that, four accused were arrested in a police operation and they confessed to their involvement in the incident and gave statements in court.
Meanwhile, just 9 days into the case, the police filed a chargesheet against the 4 accused in the court on June 23. After several days of taking the testimonies of 19 witnesses, the verdict was announced 25 days after the incident with the participation of both parties in the hearing.
