Within 12 hours of giving permission for admission to masters in Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (Paviprobi) after removing the CGPA and GPA standards, 2 journalists were beaten and assaulted while collecting news in the campus blocked by student protests. At that time, their used mobile phones, cameras and laptops were taken away and broken and they were detained. Later, Pabiprobi administration and Chhatra League leaders and activists released them at midnight on the condition of not publishing news on the mentioned incident. According to campus sources, within 12 hours of the cancellation of CGPA and GPA standards, the students protested by blocking the VC from noon on April 5. When the women students sought help from the journalists, the journalists who were present tried to report the incident to the VC Swadesh Chandra Samant, but he did not answer the phone, so the journalists tried to capture the scene of the beating of the women students inside the hostel. The attackers tried to take away the journalists’ mobile phones. Later, seeing the deterioration of the situation, the journalists took a position at the 1st gate of the campus. After some time, Pobiprobi Chhatra League General Secretary Mehdi Hasan Tarek and Pobiprobi administration picked up Abdul Qayoum, representative of Daily Sun and Bangla Tribune, Pobiprobi Chhatra League vice president Rubayet and organizing secretary Shihab Bukhari and their people. Begum Sufia took the journalist Qayyum in front of the hall and started beating him before he could understand anything. Where the registrar of Pobiprobi was present, Professor Dr. Many teachers and students including Santosh Kumar Bose. During this time, the ID card, mobile and laptop of working media were taken from Qayoum. At the end of the beating, Chhatra League leaders Rubayet and Shihab destroyed the mobile phone used by Qayyum by erasing all the information. After two hours, Qayyum was released on the condition of not publishing the news of the incident.
Tahira Liza, the victim of the attack, said that on April 5, Kavi Begum Sufia Kamal came out of the hall with ordinary students to join the peaceful stand program to solve the complications of postgraduate admission. Meanwhile, Medha, Farzana, Preeti, Ananya, Saran, Binti, Nazifa, Sushmita, Amreen, Sumaiya, Swarna took me to the public room by showing us fear with various weapons. After they took him to the gun room, they physically assaulted me. During the attack, they said that the general secretary of Pabiprobi Chhatra League branch, Mehdi Hasan Tarek Bhai, should be punished for joining the program despite the ban. After the attack, my classmates took me to Paviprabi Health Care Center and they sent me to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, some journalists who came to help us were beaten up.
In this regard, Pobiprobi BCL general secretary Mehdi Hasan Tarek and accused BCL leader Ashraful Alam Khan tried to contact Rubayet’s mobile phone several times, but they did not receive the call. Chhatra League President Arafat Islam Sagar said that it is a tughloki incident of the administration to postpone the admission of the senior elder brothers who have completed honors in the Master’s program within 12 hours. It cannot be desirable in any way. The campus Chhatra League stands by the brothers, protesting that this immoral decision will not be accepted in any way. In response to the question about the beating of two journalists, he said that the accused are being identified by looking at the video footage. Of course the authorities will take action against them.
Registrar Professor Dr. Santos Kumar Basu said in this context – Some journalists entered the student hall and videoed the fight.
