Rajiv Dey: There is no alternative to public awareness and collective initiatives to combat climate change, said Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo, MP.

The Environment Minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a special seminar titled “Climate Change: Today’s Actions, Tomorrow’s Security” organized on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026 at the Department of Environment Auditorium in Agargaon in the capital on Saturday (July 11) morning. The seminar was organized by the joint initiative of Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) and various environmental organizations.

He said that climate change is no longer a future threat, it is our daily reality. Irregular rainfall, intense heat waves and coastal salinity are threatening our lives and livelihoods. Protecting the environment is not possible for the government alone, the active participation of ordinary citizens is essential to build a clean and green Bangladesh.

Special guest of the event, Dr. Md. Saimum Parvez, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Environment, Forests and Climate Change, said that protecting the environment should not be just a government project, but should be established as a national culture.

He also said that the government alone cannot protect the environment; for this, the active participation of civil society, environmental organizations, the young generation, marginalized communities and people from all walks of life must be ensured.

Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) President Professor Dr. Nur Mohammad Talukder presided over the event, and Mohammad Humayun Kabir Suman, Joint Secretary of BAPA, delivered the welcome speech and vote of thanks on behalf of the Environment Day Organizing Committee.

Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) Vice President Professor Dr. M. Firoz Ahmed presented the keynote address at the seminar.

Director General of the Department of Environment Dr. Md. Lutfar Rahman, representatives of various environmental organizations, researchers, sustainable development experts, and media journalists were present.
