Faruk Rahman, Satkhira: Five people, including firefighters, are sick in heavy smoke from a fire in Bliss Hospital in Satkhira. A terrible fire broke out at the 10-storey Bliss Hospital located at the Chowrangi intersection on the Satkhira-Khulna highway in the city.
On Tuesday (August 4), at around 1.30 pm, members of the Satkhira Fire Service reached the spot after receiving reports of a fire from an oxygen cylinder leakage in a basement room. Many people, including firefighters, were reported to have fallen ill due to the smoke, but there were no casualties. However, about 50 patients and their relatives fell ill due to the smoke.
According to fire service sources, six units of the Satkhira Fire Service started working to control the fire and it was possible to bring the fire under control. However, many people, including firefighter workers, fell ill due to the heavy smoke. There were no casualties as the patients were quickly rescued and taken to various hospitals including the nearby Satkhira Medical College Hospital, Sadar Hospital, and Heart Foundation.
Traffic on the Satkhira-Khulna highway was completely stopped after the fire. A long queue of ambulances was seen at the scene to take the injured to the hospital. Members of the Satkhira Sadar Police Station, BGB, and traffic department worked to control the situation.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station Masudur Rahman said that the fire was brought under control with the cooperation of the Fire Service, BGB, and police. Many people fell ill due to the heavy smoke. However, there were no casualties.
Deputy Assistant Director of the Fire Service in Satkhira Saifuzzaman said that upon receiving the information, two units first started fire control work. Later, four more units worked together and were able to bring the fire under control. There were no casualties.
Additional Director of the hospital, Pradeep Kumar Biswas, said, “We came down from the third floor after hearing the news of a fire on the ground floor. Then the patients were quickly evacuated. Upon receiving the news, members of the Fire Service, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police reached the spot and brought the fire under control after a couple of hours of effort. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are not known.”
