 A human chain-meeting was held at Rangpur Press Club premises on the morning of Saturday, March 25, under the initiative of “Save Teesta Bachao Andolan” to demand a fair share of the water of 54 rivers including Teesta. The convenor of the organization, former student advocate Palash Kanti Nag, spoke in the gathering under the chairmanship of Professor Mozahar Ali, Professor Abdus Sobhan, freedom fighter Mozaffar Hossain Chand, journalist Bablu Nag, labor leader Sabuj Roy, Mosiur Rahman, women leader Sanjida Akhter and others. The speakers in the gathering said that India is international. It is unilaterally withdrawing water from 54 rivers including Teesta in violation of river law. Due to diversion of water by dam at Ghazaldoba upstream of Teesta we are on our way to North Bengal desert. Our life-nature-environment is endangered due to water encroachment in India. Pramatta Teesta dhu-dhu balu has turned into fodder. Thousands of fishermen and fishermen are unemployed. Agricultural production is being disrupted due to lack of water in Teesta. Currently, India is taking steps to withdraw water from Teesta by digging two new canals. The speakers demanded an end to the disastrous plan by India to withdraw Teesta water by digging new canals and effective action by the government to get its fair share of water from all 54 rivers including Teesta.
