Cox Bazar Correspondent : Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, the support of the people is our strength. So as long as we have life, we will work for this country and the people of this country.
She said this at a short rally after starting the work of re-excavating Patli Canal in PMkhali Union this morning.
Stating that BNP does politics for the people, the Prime Minister said, ‘The source of all power of BNP is the people. And the BNP government wants to change the fate of the people of the country.’
She said, I saw in the newspapers that after this year’s budget, the price of nothing has increased. Because the tax that was on all essential items including rice, pulses, oil, salt has been removed from 60 products in the budget two days ago. So that the price of daily necessities does not increase. Its purpose and goal is only one, so that the people of the country can live well.’
Stating that the opposition is opposing the proposed budget to create instability in the country, the Prime Minister said, ‘The opposition is saying that they do not accept this anti-people budget.’
Addressing the people present, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, ‘I want to ask you a question, the opposition party does not accept the budget in which taxes have been reduced. The budget in which the price of alcohol has been increased, the budget in which the price of cigarettes has been increased, is also not to the liking of the opposition party. So do you understand the opposition party’s objective this time?’
Tareq Rahman said, ‘Their (opposition party) goal or objective is not to stand by the people of the country. Their objective is only one, which is to create instability and unrest in the country, to confuse people.’
It is worth noting that last Thursday, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in Parliament.
Meanwhile, at the beginning of her speech, the Prime Minister asked the people present, why have you come here? To inaugurate the re-excavation of the Patli Canal. This canal was excavated by the late President Ziaur Rahman about 50 years ago. 40 thousand people will benefit from the excavation of this canal. 8,500 farmers will benefit. That is why we have set a target of digging 23,000 canals in the next five years.
He said, ‘Bangladesh is an agricultural country. But along with agriculture, we must also give importance to industry and trade. If industry and trade improve, employment opportunities will be created for our children. Jobs will be available, business and commerce can be done. That is why we have increased taxes on all products produced in the country, but we have also increased taxes on the same products that come from abroad. We have made a provision in this budget so that industries producing products produced in the country get support. This is not liked by the opposition party either.’
He said, ‘I want to say, you are the owners of this country.’ The owner of the country is not any political party, nor is the owner of the country any family, the owner of the country is the 200 million people of Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister said, ‘This country belongs to all of us. This country is our first address, this country is our last address. That is why we say that if we can build this country, then we will be good, and our children will be able to live in peace.’
She said, ‘If we cannot build this country, then our children will suffer. Does anyone want their children to suffer? We don’t want that either. That is why we say one thing, we will do the work, we will build the country, Bangladesh first.’
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad, Cox’s Bazar-3 MP Lutfur Rahman Kajal, local leader Harunur Rashid and many others spoke at the rally held under the chairmanship of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila BNP President Abdul Mabud.
Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated the canal re-excavation work in PMkhali Union of Sadar Upazila.
The Prime Minister got off the plane in torrential rain and reached PMkhali by road. Ignoring the rain, he personally picked up a spade and inaugurated the re-excavation work of Patli Canal. Later, the Prime Minister planted a palm sapling on the banks of the canal.
